The fact that President Trump trusts and values him likely elevates him in North Korea’s eyes. Knowing they are negotiating with someone whose views closely align with the US president’s will make it easier to trust his words. These negotiations are already a highly complicated affair. Losing Pompeo would have been a huge blow.
